  Tassu Mat from Finland
Tassu is a biodegradable mulch mat, which was developed in Finland over the last few years. It is composed of recycled paper, ground bird-cherry pulp, peat and ashes and is held together with a starch-based adhesive. The mat measures 430mm in diameter and 40mm in thickness. A slit in one side allows for ease of installation round the seedling, and leads to an inside opening of 30mm.
The Tassu mulch mat has been used on a large scale in Finland for more than six years. The integrity of the mat is 3-5 years, after which it biodegrades.
ForVAMS, after a meeting in June with representatives from the Tassu mulch mat research group have since set up a trial on an alder site in Co. Wexford. The aim of the trial is to compare the weed suppressing qualities of the Tassu mat with those of the herbicide regime of the site.
